Ecuador - 25 September 2025,
Movimientos de Tierra y Construcciones MOTICONCI Cía. Ltda. has been awarded a USD 16.12 million contract by the Municipal Decentralised Autonomous Government of the Canton Portoviejo (GAD Portoviejo) to build storm drainage, sanitary sewer, and potable water systems in seven rural parishes in Portoviejo, Ecuador. Signed on September 25, 2025, the contract is one of the most ambitious public infrastructure investments in the region, with the goal of improving rural living conditions and essential public services.
Thousands of people who have long lacked consistent access to safe water and effective drainage systems will benefit from the extensive projects, which will bring modern stormwater, sanitation, and drinking water infrastructure to all seven rural parishes. Crucita's drinking water supply, which is linked to the larger rural regional network, is another aspect of the project.
The project's main technical highlights are as follows:
500 litres per second is the total design flow
Timeframe for planning: Until 2050
Source of water: Poza Honda Reservoir
Treatment system: downstream of the intake is a centralised purification plant
Distribution: Independent subsystems for each parish, including San Gabriel and neighbouring communities, along with pressured main lines
These design specifications guarantee that the system is scalable and sustainable, able to satisfy future demands brought on by climatic variability and population growth.
This contract extends the European Investment Bank's (EIB) strategic financing of Portoviejo's infrastructure improvements through the municipality's "Plan Triple A" programme, which aims to increase rural Ecuador's access to potable water and sanitation services.
ensuring constant availability of safe and clean drinking water
extending contemporary sewage systems to enhance public health
Improving stormwater management to lower the risk of erosion and flooding
Improving water resource management and climate resilience
The project directly contributes to Ecuador's national targets for universal access to water and sanitation coverage under the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda by bringing infrastructure to historically underserved parishes.
The program's long-term goal, according to municipal sources, is to guarantee equitable development between urban and rural areas with sustainable infrastructure that can handle upcoming environmental and demographic challenges.
